Abstract: Voices in the City by Anita Desai offers a complex depiction of women struggling to define themselves within the emotional and social boundaries of urban middle-class India. This paper presents a feminist interpretation of the novel, examining how female identity, silence, and resistance are influenced by patriarchal family systems and societal norms. Through an analysis of Desai’s women characters, the study investigates how women experience alienation not only on a personal level but also as gendered individuals constrained by a male-dominated society. The city in the novel emerges both as a restrictive environment and as a space that heightens women’s awareness of their emotional and intellectual isolation. Using feminist literary theory, the paper contends that Desai highlights women’s inner consciousness to uncover the subtle mechanisms of oppression present in everyday domestic and social interactions. Rather than portraying open rebellion, Voices in the City emphasizes psychological conflict and inner resilience, revealing the intricate nature of women’s quest for identity and autonomy. This study enriches feminist interpretations of Indian English literature by demonstrating how Desai’s narrative gives voice to women’s restrained yet enduring forms of resistance within the context of urban modernity.
