ABSTRACT
The study presents a thorough examination of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and its potential to cultivate a culture of research and innovation within higher education institutions. NEP 2020 aspires to transform the Indian educational framework by implementing several pivotal initiatives, notably the creation of the National Research Foundation (NRF). The NRF is intended to support competitive, peer-reviewed grant applications across various disciplines, emphasizing societal impact and interdisciplinary collaboration. Its primary goals include improving the quality and relevance of research, promoting research activities in academic institutions nationwide, and ensuring that research outcomes are effectively translated into actionable policies. Additionally, the NRF aims to foster a supportive research environment through sufficient funding, mentorship, and national coordination, while also establishing robust connections between research endeavors and policy formulation. The study addresses challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, a lack of trained educators, and insufficient funding, alongside strategies to bridge the digital divide that may hinder effective technology integration in education. Furthermore, it underscores the necessity of harmonizing traditional academic fields with emerging research areas and technologies, ensuring equitable access to research opportunities across diverse regions and demographics, and aligning research outputs with national priorities and societal demands. Various articles and analyses from academic journals and policy think tanks have evaluated NEP 2020, discussing its comprehensive approach, implementation challenges, and promotion of technology, implications for research and innovation, and its potential role in advancing India as a knowledge-driven economy. In summary, the study offers an extensive insight into the NEP 2020's vision for reshaping India's educational landscape, particularly in enhancing research and innovation capabilities to meet emerging demands.
