Abstract:  The purpose of this study is to agglomerate the functions that are feasible for the academic libraries to provide extension service other than their parent organisation. It examines the role of community libraries for the development of community. The review focusses on concepts of outreach and extension activities by libraries, successful implementation of extension or outreach services by    public libraries and academic libraries towards the local people. It also provide information on the problems and limitations on providing community services and also reviews that are relating to the adoption of villages by higher academic institutions for providing community services in accordance to the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan scheme of Government of India.
