ABSTRACT

Ancient Tamils maintained a close and harmonious relationship with nature, considering plants, animals, and birds as integral components of their social and ecological environment. Among the various plant species, the banana tree (Musa spp.) occupies a significant position in Tamil culture and traditional life. The banana plant is highly valued because every part of it, from the root to the fruit, serves multiple purposes and contributes to human welfare. It plays an essential role in food practices, religious rituals, cultural traditions, and socio-economic activities. Tamil literary works portray the banana tree not only as a source of nourishment but also as a symbol of kinship, prosperity, and sacredness, often associated with temple traditions and ritual practices. From the Sangam period to the contemporary era, the banana tree has remained an indispensable element of Tamil society and cultural heritage. This study examines the representation and significance of the banana tree in Tamil literature, particularly focusing on its cultural, ecological, and symbolic dimensions as reflected in classical and later literary traditions.
